Rav-Kav is Israel's unified transport card: it pays for buses, trains and light rail almost everywhere in the country. The card comes in two types: a personal Rav-Kav with the holder's photo and an anonymous Rav-Kav sold without any documents. For a tourist the difference hardly matters, but for a worker who commutes to shifts every day and keeps money on the card, the choice affects both wallet and peace of mind. Here is how they differ and what to get in your situation.

Personal vs anonymous Rav-Kav: the difference

  • Personal card — your photo, name and discount profile are printed on it. The card is linked to you: if lost, it can be blocked and replaced together with the balance.
  • Anonymous card — a regular no-name card. You can buy it instantly, but it is not linked to anyone: lose it and the money is gone.

Personal Rav-Kav with photo: key advantages

  • Money recovery if the card is lost. The old card is blocked, and the balance plus any loaded passes are transferred to a new one. For a worker this is the main argument: the card often holds a monthly pass or a decent sum.
  • Discount profiles. Discounts for youth, students, seniors and other categories can only be recorded on a personal card — an anonymous card always charges the standard adult fare.
  • Free to issue. The first issuance of a personal card is free — you only pay for a replacement of a lost card.

Documents for a foreigner

You need a photo ID. Israeli citizens use their teudat zehut, while a foreign worker can use a passport: at a service center they take your photo on the spot and issue the card. When applying online, choose "passport" as the ID type and upload your photo.

Where to get one

  • Rav-Kav service centers — usually at central bus stations (tahana merkazit) in major cities;
  • the public transport information desk at Ben Gurion Airport — convenient right after landing;
  • ticket offices of transport companies in a number of cities;
  • online — via the official ravkavonline.co.il website or card top-up apps.

Anonymous Rav-Kav: when it helps

Anonymous cards are sold at kiosks, pharmacies, vending machines and ticket offices — no documents, a couple of minutes. It is the best option for your first days: land, buy a card, top it up and go. The card costs a small fee — check the current price on the official website or at the point of sale.

The downsides follow from anonymity:

  • if lost or stolen, the balance is not refunded — the card belongs to no one, and you cannot prove it was yours;
  • no discount profile or personal discounts can be recorded;
  • no duplicate is issued — only a brand-new card from scratch.

Practical tip: do not keep large sums on an anonymous card and do not load a monthly pass onto it.

What a worker should choose

  • Staying to work long-term — get a personal Rav-Kav with a photo. It is free and quick, your money and passes are protected, and if you qualify for a discount, it will actually apply.
  • First days in the country — buy an anonymous card so you are not stranded. As soon as you have a spare hour, visit a service center with your passport, get a personal card and top up that one from then on.
